A main stack hero 10+ attack/defense or expert air magic, etc will easily do far more than a defending hero. Taking ballistics easily lets you destroy the draw bridge or a section of the wall in one turn, and honestly once you get past the early stage of the game it is pretty much impossible to sit in your castle and win.
The first time you run it, you're not supposed to skip the intro. After that you should, but if the first run isn't recorded in registry, the game will think you're running it for the first time again. Best solution is the HoMM3 HD patch linked to in post 2. Sergey_Dukman.
And about a game itself very raw repack with not working features, damaged campaign script. no random maps, harder to get all 4 elements mastery, no mastery deleter. no choice of lvl1 troops after buying lvl2 troops( when you get archangels you cant buy angels anymore same with all troops) only 4 slot for other artifacts, no artifact uniting
